NaBloPoMo: Thirty Acts of Love: Day 17. The Small Stuff

I don't get along well with technology. It seems to complicate my life more than simplify it, and that's probably because I don't take the time to figure it out. I just don't care. But a few weeks ago, I was playing bridge with a friend and she offered me an old iPhone of hers. She assured me I didn't need to actually use it as a phone, I could just use it as an iTouch. So far as I can tell, my disconnected iPhone has two advantages over my Palm. First, it syncs with my google calendar, which is how Ed and I keep track of who's doing what. Second, I can quickly answer email when I'm at home or near wifi, rather than having to turn my PC on. Of course, my Palm allegedly has this latter capability, but I never bothered to figure it out.

The disconnected iPhone could have the advantage of having a vast store of music on it for when I go running. And I'm sure it could also do a million other things, and people regularly tell me about those million other things but then they say "all you need to do is..." and that's when I lose them completely.

When I got the iPhone, I stuck it in a drawer. Helen thought it was awesome, even though it didn't do anything. Connor became hopeful that I would enter the current year of technology. Ed knew that if I was ever going to pick it up, he'd have to make it do something.

And he did.

Ed has managed to install whatever was needed to get my calendar, he's hooked the device up for email, and recently, he has taken on the project of adding music to it. There are also a bunch of other icons that I can touch, and I suspect they do something, but I have no idea what. Connor or Helen will figure them out at some point, right?

My contribution to the project has been to walk into the Apple store and tell them I needed a cord that would plug into my phone and computer. The very helpful Apple person asked if I had the cord that plugged into the wall. I do (thank you, Bill). The Apple rep explained that the USB port was in the same device. Clever, eh? I stepped outside the very trendy Apple store, placed a call on my very uncool flip phone to Ed, and Ed confirmed that we had the necessary device, but he was shocked just like me. That made me feel a little better.

Who knows what my disconnected iPhone will look like in a few months? But I do know, whatever it looks like will be completely because Ed has taken to making the thing functional for me.
